London to Australia Overland

Tour de Force now have an overland connection with Oz, but by 2 different journeys.

Independent journey with own 4x4

Or, if you prefer doing it your own way, then Tour de Force has been advising Sandy and Steph Glenn on their big trip from the UK to OZ. Early in 2010, Sandy came and had an initial consultation with Tour de Force whilst he was in the planning stage of the trip and we were able to advise him on a host of issues, from vehicle choice, route planning, paperwork, visas and top tips. As Sandy wrote in an email after the meeting: "Many thanks for your time and assistance yesterday. I enjoyed our conversation and learnt a lot."

We then had another meeting, along with Sandy's wife Steph, at the World Travel Market in London in November 2010, where they then had the chance to meet many local operators for the countries they would be visiting. Great place to find out information, sniff out local guides and agents to help with the formalities.

At the end of March 2011, Sandy and Steph hit the road and are now well into their journey of a lifetime. You can follow their adventures here

We are back from the rally. 50 classic cars from 1925 to the present day, from UK to Marrakech over 10 days.

The cars lined up at Dover for the ferry. Here's a selection of some of the beautiful cars on display:

Myself and Jim were marshals, we even had badges that said as much.....

Although we were new to the rallying scene, it wasn't long before we were up and running as checkpoint officials, setting up are various points along the route to time the cars:

Besides our marshaling duites, we were instrumental in getting all the vehicles and crews into Morocco through the somewhat chaotic border at Tangiers. We were also glad to be of help after a few incidents on the road, including this head-on collision with a local vehicle, luckily no-one was injured:

All in all it was a great experience and we are glad to report that as a consequence of our work on the Casablanca Rally, Tour de Force have been invited to join the organisation team for the epic Peking to Paris in 2010.

November 2010

Unfortunately the rally has been cancelled in it's present form. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office invited Tour de Force and The Endurance Rally Association to a meeting, at which they outlined the terrorism threat for the Sahara Region. They explained there is now a high level threat of kidnap in certain areas of the Sahel, some of these areas the rally would be travelling through.

Obviously organising such an event does have inherent risks involved, but one has to draw a line somewhere and when the Counter Terrorism Dept of the FCO says it's too risky, you tend to listen!

However, all is not lost and we are currently looking into other possible routes which would bypass the danger areas. More details to follow...

January 2011

It's back on! Not to be outdone, The Endurance Rally Association is exploring other routes down to Cape Town and Tour de Force will be there to assist. Jim Allen from TDF will travel with rally director Philip Young on an epic recce of a new route through Africa.

Tour de Force, along with the Royal Geographical Society, will be hosting this feature at Adventure Travel Live 2011.

This exhibition aims to bring all aspects of Adventure Travel under one roof:

Parklife Project- No Fit State Circus

Tour de Force runs away and joins the circus!

When No Fit State Circus were comissioned by a variety of different UK festivals to create a new touring show based around life in our parks and outdoor spaces, they knew just the person to call to join the madness....

No Fit State are by no means you average circus, they are Britain's leading contemporary circus company with an award winning reputation:

Having helped production manage their touring show Tabu, taking 40 perfomers and around 25 vehicles to various festivals in the UK and Europe, it seemed natural to ask Tour de Force to help with this new project.

This time the circus is coming out of the tent and into the park, a large outdoor circus rig, live band and various community groups, from unicyclists to brass bands will all come together for a week on fun in a park in Stockton as part of the Stockton International Riverside Festival

We often get asked "just what is it that you do?" It's a tough one, hopefully the main Tour de Force website gives you an idea of the breadth of challenges we undertake.

Presentation at the Royal Geographical Society " Explore" weekend.

Tour de Force were asked to give a presentation at the Royal Geographical Society as part of their "Explore" weekend. The presentation was entitled "5 things I wish I had known before I went travelling". Duncan was also a panel member for the Overland Expedition seminar at the same event.

For anyone thinking about an adventure, this is THE event anywhere in the world. Where else can you meet people who have taken 13 years to travel around the world by human power alone, or driven a chocolate powered lorry to Timbucktu..

December 2009

It's been a busy month getting everything ready for the launch on the 13th December. Tour de Force and The Adventurists have been liaising with UK and Cameroon government officials on smoothing the way for the teams entering Cameroon and ensuring as much of the money raised from the auction of the cars goes to the local charities, rather than on customs import duties. We are getting there...slowly..

All was going well until 3 days before the launch, when myself and Tom (Head Adventurist) were called to a meeting at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. We met with the Head of Counter Terrorism no less. He told us in no uncertain terms that the threat of kidnap in Mauritania had increased dramatically and that the FCO would be changing it's level of advice to "Against all travel" in the areas through which the teams would be travelling. This, in effect, meant that the cars would not be able to drive further south than Morocco. Hmmm.. The FCO even released a minsterial statement about the rally and gave us our very own webpage on their site:

However, all was not lost and we weren't going to let a bunch of kidnappers spoil the fun. After much frantic searching the internet and many phone calls, we found a Roll On, Roll Off ferry that goes from Tilbury, UK to Dakar, Senegal. Result! So the vast majority of the teams are shipping their cars from either the UK, or Casablanca, to Dakar, then will drive to Cameroon from there. A couple of teams are still planning on driving through Mauritania, we can't stop them, so good luck to 'em..

So the UK launch went ahead as planned, organised of course by Tour de Force. We held the event at Dunsfold Park, home of a rather famous TV motoring show, involving 3 badly dressed middle aged men, a mystery driver and a test rack...To avoid legal action from the BBC, we called it "Bottom Gear".It was a great day and much fun was had by all, see here for a report on the festivities:

February 2010

We're back! After a month in the tropical heat of Central Africa, Tour de Force returns to a cold UK winter. It has been an amazing time in Limbe, Cameroon, making sure everything was in place to welcome the teams after their epic drive across Africa. Many meetings with government ministers and British High Commissioners in Yaounde, plus liasing with local authorities resulted in everyone being as prepared as possible to receive the teams.

First across the finish line were Camervroom, they broke down coming into Cameroon, then the vehicle that was towing them broke down as well, but they were not going to be beaten at the fnale hurdle and eventually managed to fix the tow vehicle and arrived triumphantly in Limbe-on a tow rope....

It wasn't long before more teams arrived and by Friday 15th Jan, we had enough cars to form a parade around Limbe to announce the arrival of the rally and to publicise the festival the next day.

The festival, organised by The Adventurists and Gobal Music Exchange, "Under the Volcano" took place on the 16th January. An event to celebrate Cameroon's amazing music and culture and also to welcome those brave Africa Rally teams that had made it to the end.

In the evening, things got a little more funky, the Baka tribespeople led the charge with Global Music Exchange's founder members Martin and Sue

Things then got a little more "festive" as the free beer procured by Tour de Force was consumed by the rally teams, much bad dancing ensued

It's fairly obvious that a good time was had by all..

After the fun of the festival, the next big event was the sale of the rally cars by auction, with the proceeds going to local community projects in Cameroon. There were some tough negotiations with local customs before the auction to try and lower the import duties on the car thereby raising more money for the projects.

There was real local interest in buying a car.

In total we raised the grand sum of £14,000 from the sale of the cars, which was fantastic. The money will go to creating health and education projects for the Baka, tribespeople, plus we were also able to give some of the proceeds to Ape Action Africa and Limbe Wildlife Centre.

We gained alot of local press interest for the rally, festival and auction:

I was also interviewed by this character for local radio, we did a "live link up" which involved him shouting questions at me whilst I sat with his phone stuck to my ear as the call went directly through to the radion station who broadcast it live.

I then decided to interview him on his thoughts on the rally

We're Off!

On the 10th September 2010, nearly 100 cars were flagged away from the Great Wall of China on an epic 14,500 kms journey to Paris. Tour de Force supplied 3 of the logistics support crew for this event. Duncan Milligan and Tony Jones in car 158, whilst Jim Allen was in the film crew car 153.

Not surprisingly, wherever we went, the rally caused a bit of a stir. Either with police escorts or people lining the streets to wave us on.

Talk about old, this Itala is the same as the orginal car used by Count Borghese in the original challenge in 1907

The trip travelled through Mongolia, with some amazing scenery. We travelled for a week without roads, camping along the way.

A blast from the past, we found a dead car from the Mongol Rally, an event also organised by The Adventurists, for whom Tour de Force organised The Africa Rally in Jan 2010. At the same place I saw this guy doing some welding for a competitor-he was wearing sunglasses...

Russia and Kazakhstan

After Mongolia, the beauty of the Russian Altai mountains was a pleasant surprise

Kazakhstan was about terrible roads, hilariously bad hotels and our own breakdown..

If ever you end up in Semey, try not to stay here..

This was our luxury en-suite bathroom.

On the road from Semey to Almaty, we suffered the consquences of having towed a variety of very heavy old cars up and down various mountains and dirt roads in Mongolian. Our clutch went..

It made for a long 20 out of 24 hours in a truck

But we are not in adventure logistics for nothing. Within 36 hours we had got the Landrover the 900 kms to Almaty, sourced another clutch, fitted and tested the vehicle and were back in the game.

We pulled off the road, stopped here to get some sleep before heading off again.

Challenges

Just the sheer pace of the rally was a real challenge, sometimes we would travel over 600 kms per day, early starts and late finishes were par for the course. Some of the competitors would be driving in open topped cars for 16 hours a day in scorching heat, freezing cold and sand storms. Epic stuff. Logistically, one of the biggest challenges was getting over 100 cars over 11 national borders was hard going..

The Iranian border- don't worry we did ask permission first. Taking photos at borders should be done very carefully!!

Breakdowns were a daily occurrence, often we would come across a vehicle stranded at the side of the road, the competitors were always very grateful for assistance..

The scale of the operation meant that any logistics challenges were multiplied by the number of people and cars involved, as this video shows

There were "political" challenges, on a small scale, dealing diplomatically with competitors who were tired, stressed about their car and way outside their comfort zone when it came to travelling through some of these amazing countries.

On a larger scale, in Iran, there was a very strange atmosphere, the people were all very friendly and welcoming, but the 'powers that be' were keen to capitalise on such a high profile event. We had an official reception in Tabriz and along the entire route were banners like this.

All for our benefit....

Once we got into Europe, things became much easier, roads got better, facilities were of a higher standard, service stations were more frequent and, of course, the prices got higher...

The final day was emotional for many people, it had been an amazing journey, with many incredible highs and deep lows. What better way to enter Paris, having driven from Peking, than along the Champs Elysee

The final kilometre...there had been 14,499 since Peking!

As is always the way, Tony and myself were not present at the finish, we were running the final control before entering the Place Vendome.

Conclusion

All in all the rally was a huge success, the competitors had the journey of a lifetime, through some amazing countries. Huge credit should be given to The Endurance Rally Assoc. for the smooth organisation of the event. The paperwork for over 100 cars and 200 people is truly mind boggling. All the support team worked extremely hard, the mechanics, medics, timekeepers, marshalls, course car and hotels team. We always left an hour before the competitors and arrived long after them at the nightstops. But no complaints from anyone, that was our job, it was what we were there to do.

More rallies are in the pipeline and Tour de Force will be part of the next adventure....

Sheffield Schools Expedition to Lesotho

It's one week until we go, everything is in place and we will be in Cape Town a week before the main expedition arrives to ensure everything is ready for 65 pupils and staff to enjoy their journey to Lesotho and Jo'burg.

1st May 2009

It was something else. Nigh on 70 people (42 young people, 18 support staff and 6 crew), roughly 1500 kms, 3 meals a day, camping equipment, up to 6 vehicles and alot of laughs. Along with Face Africa, Tour de Force had 3 people involved in this expedition. We even got to meet a real African king.

We were very honoured to have a reception with His Majesty King Letsie III at his palace in Maseru. This was to recognise the work the expedition has undertaken in Lesotho in working with the local communities.

As well as working in Lesotho, the expedition worked with the Calabash Trust in a township school in Port Elizabeth.

Both the sheffield students and the local community worked together to build a new playground for the younger children.

Flying car to Timbucktu

This really isn't a joke. Rather an attempt to re-invent the concept of "fly-drive!"

Latest Developments

We are there to help make sure the expedition arrives in one piece. It kinda makes sense as we have been to Tomboctou 4 times now. Here's a little secret, Tomboctou is not the most glamorous place on earth. But that's not the point, it's the history of the place that counts. What the Tomboctuians (just made that up..) will make of the flying car remains to be seen.

We have had lots of exciting meetings and have another training weekend coming up in December. Actual lift off is the 14th Jan 2009.

16th Jan:

Lift off! Skycar left the Sheraton Hotel Kensington at 10:00am on the 14th Jan 2009. Talk about media scrum, there were over 100 journalists there, including 25 camera crews. It was madness!

Then it was off to Dunsfold Aerodrome for final testing:

Here's the first run with the new wing. Take off was not allowed due to the CAA being killjoys about licensing....

At present the rest of the team are on their way through Europe, I am going to join them in Southern Morocco on the 27th Jan.

11th March 2009:

Well, it's been a while. But the good news is....We made it!

Skycar arrived into Tomboctou at 18:30 on February 25th 2009.

We arrived to an amazing reception, a phalanx of motorcycle outriders joined the expedition on the outskirts of the town and by the time we arrived in the main square, we had a mini carnival following us!

Here's a picture of myself and Neil Laughton the expedition leader just after we arrived in downtown Tomboctou.

It was quite a challenge to get the expedition, vehicles and film crew from A to B and across various borders.

That plus the logistics of travelling in some very remote areas, here we are filling up with water before heading out into the desert.

The car flying were definately the highlights of the expedition, no matter how many times we saw it in the air, it still took your breath away! Here's the car on a test flight in Spain-thanks to Tim Maw for the picture.
